Nikon only rate the autofocus system of the D7000/D300/etc to f/5.6 - that is, they believe it will focus fine with lenses which are f/5.6 (including light-loss compensation for teleconverters) or faster, but they do not guarantee that the autofocus will work reliably with slower lenses.

Having said this, autofocus works fine on my D200 & D300 when used with the f/6.7 300mm f/4 + TC-17E, and I've seen examples where a 2x converter was used with that lens...
