I also came from a D700 to the D600. And yes, the D700 felt like you could hammer nails with it.

The D600 is not quite at the same level. Some of the buttons feel a little less substantial, but I have a gut feeling this will turn out to be a pretty tough camera.

I know one guy who quite literally took his D90 nearly around the world, under less than ideal conditions and it's still running without a hitch.

I felt the same way about my F2/F3 vs the FM. The F bodies felt like they were milled from a solid block of metal, whereas the FM felt like 'stamped' steel. In practice the FM turned out to be almost impossible to kill.

On the whole Nikon cameras have always been extremely tough, even their consumer models.
