The labs usually use their own 'editing' process, and unless you expressly demand so, they do apply many changes to your images.
The most common oness are AC (auto contrast) and density which kill most images.

I suggest you go back to the shop, tell them you did not like the prints and ask them to make new prints without ANY modification whatsoever (including contrast, sharpness, density and color).

The result won't look as good as you expect but will be much closer to what you see on your monitor.
