Is waiting for a D400 realistic?
Sep 20, 2012

With Photokina, 2012 drawing to a close (Sunday, Sept. 23), Nikon has apparently chosen to pass on an upgrade to both the D300 and the D7000. One has to wonder if Nikon will ultimately pass on the DX format, altogether. Or, possibly the floods of the recent past crippled their financial ability to produce both a new FX camera and a new DX camera. Whatever their corporate thinking, one thing is certain…there is a large segment of Nikon’s dedicated fan base who are sorely disappointed (not to mention being stuck with a line-up of expensive DX lenses for their aging DX cameras). Nikon has to realize this. Yet, they do nothing to explain, or give a glimmer of hope. What are they thinking? Is the DX camera destined to become the Nikkormat of today’s camera world? The announcement of the D600 would certainly point to the demise of the DX format. But, alas, there is a day and a half left to debut the mythical D400. And, of course, Christmas is just around the corner. But, for myself (and, many others) Christmas came early. After months and months of frustration, I sold off my old D300 and DX lenses; and bought a D800. Maybe that was Nikon’s master plan. With the announcement of the D600, coupled with no hint of a D400, it would certainly appear as such. Just sayin’.
