I started with the 50 1.4 but purchased the 50 1.2L last year. While the L version is my preferred lens, I have found the 50 1.4 to make a great lightweight addition to my 24-105L when I travel or to carry around a light kit. However, if you have a limited budget, I would recommend getting a different lens to give you more options. Earlier this year, I purchased the 28 1.8 which I have been very impressed with. It is similar to the 50 1.4 in size, weight, build and the IQ is about the same wide open. It would compliment your 50L nicely.
