I had to laugh at your comment about the beaver swamp photo. I don't know how I could get any closer. I was standing literally in the middle of the swamp... on a mat of floating vegetation... my tripod would sink through the mat if I was not careful where I placed it.
Maybe I'll try a pano sometime but it is a long narrow swamp squeezed in between two ridges and there is not too much else on the sides but woods that would not add anything to the photo.
Additionally, I'm a squarish format guy having started in photography with a 4x5 camera many decades ago... the 2:3 ratio of a dSLR (or 35mm film) often seems too wide for me... so, then again, maybe not!
