I upgraded from the D300 (DX) to the D800E (FX) and have the following observations of DX v. FX:

1) The FX sensor gives much better low light, high ISO performance. I don't have a scientific comparison but on the D800e I get good quality at 6400. On the D300 I would usually not go higher than 800.

2) The FX sensor on the D800 has much better DR. You won't appreciate it until you start shooting with it, but the better DR is quite evident. In addition, you can PP more effectively and easily pull out details from shadows.

3) The main advantage of the DX format, as said above, is lighter and cheaper glass.

That's my 2 cents.
