To sum up. Upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB. Or 16 if you can afford it. In Aperture Preferences, set your preview size to no larger than your screen resolution. Turn off Face Detection, it REALLY slows down everything in Aperture. If you have just recently imported many Gigs of images, let Aperture run overnight to let it catch up with preview generation. Make sure you are running Mountain Lion.
