Larger sensor than 24x36 would be nice.

I see his point.

1. Draw a circle on a piece of paper.

2. Within that circle, draw the largest possible rectangle (not square) you can, going all the way to the edges of the circle. Try using the same proportions as the 24x36.

3. Now you should be able to see that if you enlarged that rectangle to look like a square by enlarging the vertical side (24), that the edges of the square now extend outside of the circle.

A smaller square would fit within the circle. As he said, 30 x 30 would make sense. At that, the sensor would have slightly better edge resolution and slightly less vignetting. The corners would be somewhat soft. The sensor would also have slightly more pixels.
