I wouldn't be so fast to dismiss what Steve is saying.

As others have already mentioned in this thread; your final exposure is going to be determined by aperture + shutter speed + ISO.

In mode A for example, using exposure compensation (EC) will change the shutter speed.

In M mode EC does nothing for your exposure unless you have auto ISO turned on. If auto ISO is off while in M mode all you are doing is biasing the camera meter when using EC - it doesn't affect your exposure one bit.
