Why would it mess up the exposure?

So you have experienced these purple bands when you didn't use the shutter?

It doesn't just mess up the metering, it messes up the exposure - you often get a purple or light coloured band across the centre of the frame on long exposures without covering the viewfinder. Both the D700 and D800 have a switch to the left of the viewfinder to flick to shield the viewfinder with like a rear metal shutter, it's something even the 5DIII doesn't have and it's essential in my view - believe it or not, it's a big reason why I stayed with Nikon
