I worked out the math earlier today.

With a 600mm lens, at 1000 m, the image of a 1.75 m tall woman will occupy less than 5% of the height of a FF sensor.

With a 1600mm lens (800mm F5.6 + 2x teleconverter), she's still only occupying 12% of the height of the frame.

So aside from atmospheric haze, this weeks obnoxious paparazzi was still using less than 1/400th of the surface area of the sensor for his shots.
