D600 ok with cheaper lenses?

Just wondered if you can get away with say the 24-85 or 24-120 on the 24mp sensor?

I am getting the body tomorrow but just wondered if the cheaper lenses will perform better on the D600 than on the D800

Thinking about keeping the size down!!!!
