GH3 "new 16MP multi-aspect ratio sensor"

to this lay person the advantage of a multi-aspect ratio besides not losing total pixels? I guess what I am saying is that if a sensor was 16:9, then pixels are lost going to 4:3 or 3:2 mode instead of the other way. Other than the sensor being slightly larger, I'm not sure I understand the overall advantage.
