Way back when, I was trained in science, and then did a stint in IT, and it was all about variables: remove as many as you can to find the problem. What was really irritating in this case was one of the variables (the USB hub) wasn't a problem before, so I discounted it. Assumptions are dangerous

Cheers!

I have trouble with those hubs, too. Even powered ones. Too bad, because they really are a great idea, but it just seems like computers tend to get confused by them from time to time. I can't complete a windows backup to external HD over the hub, but it works over an on-computer USB port. Glad to hear you solved it.

Hey Flashlight,

You got me thinking, and I realised that there was one variable I hadn't removed from the equation: my USB hub. I plugged the camera directly into the computer, problem solved (the hub must've gone bad in some way, as I'd used it when shooting the D700 tethered).

Cheers!

Woah, that's the last thing I wanted to hear, yikes!

I know that the cables are good (tested on other equipment), which means the port in the camera is bad, and that's really bad (I've never used the port before, and bought the camera new). I will wiggle, thanks for the tip.

Cheers!

USB cable or camera plug bad. Try a different cable and wiggle the connection.
