I often experience reception halls with ceiling-mounted florescent lighting. You can imagine how that looks.
I can and it is horrible. But in those circumstances there is no way to bounce either.
Thanks for the links. You did a good job for what was there.
As for bounce flash, it can work if the ceiling is white and low enough. In fact, I prefer that to straight on flash with the background going dark. My friend was working a reception last weekend, and he set his flash at about 70 degrees to bounce off the ceiling, (giving a soft overall light) and added a little front-facing panel to light up the guests.
