If you don't cannibalize....
In reply to cs hauser, Sep 17, 2012

One of the basic laws of marketing is so often forgotten by large companies. It runs something like this.

If you don't cannibalize your own products, others will.

Canon is ignoring this rule and letting Nikon through a now wide open door, that 3 years ago was completely shut.

A quick look at the digital photo market will reveal that at the bottom end, the phones are taking sales. Canon owned the enthusiast full frame market and lead the way in the entry level DSLR segment.

Overly cautious and conservative product development and "range management" has allowed others to steal their place.

DP Review is like a diplomat when talking about Nikon and Canon. You don't need to be a genius to hear the tone behind their diplomacy in the summary section on the Canon 6D.

They rightly observe that lenses are not the barrier to the entry level DSLR photographer as their APS-C lenses simply won't work. So we are left with specs, price and IQ

I'm a Canon user, but not a fanboy. Looking at the D600 and 6D it's clear that on paper one has a some significant advantages. Most shooters will not be able to see a difference in their shots. In that case it's advantage Nikon - again.

Nikon is on a roll, aggressively developing leading edge cameras in each segment. Canon is sitting back and hoping that it's lenses will rule the day.

Not good.
