Honestly, Nikon and Canon don't want to sell a FF DSLR for less than $2000 right now because it would kill sales of higher end FF DSLRs. I lost count of all the D4 owners saying they would buy the D800 and sell their D4 bodies. Likewise, I remember quite a few 1D-series owners who switched to the 5D back when it launched.
A cheaper FF camera would cannibalize even more of the high-end body sales ... and Nikon and Canon don't want a ton of old FF bodies selling for less than $800 on the used market because those jeopardize sales of new entry level DSLRs.
