I am 100 percent certain that Canon will announce their response to the Nikon D600 at Photokina (something like a cheaper version of the 5D mkII) and it will have the same MSRP as the D600. Camera companies like Canon and Nikon could EASILY make a FF DSLR that costs less than $1,500 (USD) but there is little profit to be had with margins so slim ... and the "trickle down" effect on the rest of the DSLR line isn't good.

Right now Nikon and Canon need a reason to "up sell" customers and full frame sensors are one of the only things remaining that serve as a clear reason to spend more on a higher-end DSLRs.

Once Canon or Nikon (or "maybe" Sony) finally takes the plunge and offers a new DSLR with a full frame sensor for around $1,500 there will be fewer and fewer reasons to spend more for a high-end DSLR.

Sure, rugged build quality and extra features like what we get from the Canon 1D series and Nikon D1/D2/D3/D4 bodies will always be desirable to some customers, but there is an increasing number of photographers who are happy to make do with lower-end bodies since sensor technology is constantly changing and there is pressure (real or imagined) to upgrade pretty frequently.
