They are very close, even with the native 36 mp

When I downsampled the d800 file to match the 24 mp using lancsos without sharpening, the d800 files were just a tick better than the D600 files. It showed a tiny bit less noise, and somewhat finer grain as well. More green channel noise in the D800, more red channel noise in the D600. Going down to anything else but pixel peeping level and I could no longer see any difference at all (apart from color). I think that after PP you will not see the difference at higher isos. But you will see it a lo iso: the extra pixels will beat the D600.

Now, we could say that's a great D600 performance. I would put it the other way around: it's a great result for a sensor with 50% more pixels. But either way, you probably have seen the best 24 Mp Fx sensor in terms of noise handling sofar.

Now I want to know if it's a Sony sensor or not ...
