JP,
I dropped my 24-70 f2.8 last year and had it repaired by Nikon in NJ. The zoom mechanism was totally frozen at about 40mm. Mine hit on the section of the lower barrel where the S/N is, so when they replaced it, the lens had a new S/N. Since then, it's worked fine. The repair cost about $800.
I'm looking at the 24-120 f4 VR, because with my D800 I have a hard time hand-holding the 24-70 and getting good images in anything worse than shade. I may rent one for a few days to see how I like it and shoot the same subjects side-by-side with both lenses.
Good luck,
Mike
