The XE-1: same "mistake" as Nikon D700?
Sep 16, 2012

When Nikon released what would become the wildly popular and now classic D700, there was an unintended downside to its success: it put a serious hurt on their D3 sales. Released just a year after the D3, and long before Nikon had a chance to fully milk sales of the revolutionary D3, the D700 offered most of what most people wanted in the D3, but in a smaller package that was half the price.

Nikon learned its lesson from that experience, which is why the D3s never spawned a D700s, despite much demand for such a camera. If you wanted the magic sensor in the D3s, you had to buy the big boy.

Flash-forward to the XE-1, which not only offers nearly everything that buyers might want in the X Pro-1 in a smaller, lighter, MUCH less expensive package, but has features unavailable on the X Pro-1.

Assuming IQ on both cameras is the same (and in theory, it should be), the quesiton is this: how big is the market willing to pay 70% more ($700) to get the XP-1's hybrid VF, while giving up the superior EVF, built-in flash and smaller size/weight of the XE-1? That's a pretty small market niche, IMO, and I think the X Pro-1 will need an upgrade to remain viable against its new sibling.
