Hiking w. a full-size tripod?

Problem: Hiking with a full-size tripod bag is awkward.
Did about 6 1/2 miles, and it was doable with the should strap around my neck. Combined weight of the tripod & ball head was less than 4 lbs; combined height less than 30". This wouldn't have worked out in warmer weather (low 70's & windy yesterday) or a longer hike.
Given that a travel tripod would fit in a backpack & you want more stability than the monopod has, has anyone hiked w. a full length tripod?
Know that backpacks designed for rifles will do the job, they are $$$. Would like to keep the cost down.
