At the risk of sounding insulting, and I do not want to offend by any means, you need to think about how your inserting the cards into the reader. I teach digital photo at a university and we have a load of different types of CF card readers and they rarely go bad, and my students are not very careful about using them!
I personally have never had one go bad, but its true, the CF reader and the pin system is not fool proof. I'd look at how your using them, in my experience there is not a lot of variation on the system, the biggest difference seems to be in the transfer format USB 2.0; USB 3.0 , firewire etc.
