I used to think paying "new" prices was worth it, just for the extended warranty. After having one lens repaired by Nikon, I am not fully willing to buy used and not have a warranty. Not only is the "warranty" not worth the paper it is written on, I don't think the folks that are actually doing the repairs really care about doing a good job. I have experience and photos to back it up. They damaged my aperture blades on a repair that had nothing to do with those blades. Then, they sent the lens back without the lens cap - and I could see the internally damaged blades before even taking it out of the box. Nikon service is crap!!
