Many many years ago around this area of the world money was scarce, to have a SLR was rare, and to have many lenses and zooms was rarer.

If you had a 50mm 1.8, you were happy for many years, a 1.2 was something to admire and a 2 quite a normal option.

One thing I do know for sure, is that we were able to take wonderful photographs. Maybe the limitations weren't so bad, it forced one to plan more carefully, move around more. You couldn't just shoot 200 photographs in one hour, the cost would have been prohibitive.

Not a bad exercise, use a 50mm lens, and limit yourself to 36 photos and make sure that at least one is outstanding.
