adjusting exposure on D7000 with +/- buttons

Is there any difference, advantage/disadvantage between adjusting the metered exposure using the + - buttons on the camera and just changing the actual shutter speed and aperture?

If shoot a picture at the metered exposure and the picture turns out too bright, I usually use the + - button the adjust the exposure until I get the "right" exposure. I could just as easily, in aperture-priority mode, close down a stop rater than adjust the exposure compensation by a stop. I still tend to think like I' m driving a manual film camera like the old Canon F1 - you can adjust aperture and shutter speed only.

Is the exposure compensation button really only for people who are shooting fully automatic in Program mode?
