Printed photos too dark - any suggestions?

Thanks Dave, but is it merely a matter of 'brightness' rather than colour calibration that is the problem? Or maybe the lab is adding its own contrast/sharpness settings as well? How can we know how bright our screen should be to get the correct printed output? My laptop screen is a standard glossyish 17incher. The highest brightness is pretty bright.
