Sweet capture! He's my favourite cyclist, always so emotional! I bet he's a really nice guy.
But you need a much higher shutter speed to freeze that kind of action!
Last time i tried to take a pic at a bike race was the late '90ies, at the first NYC bike criterium. This one has never been seen before! Pentax K1000 and SMC-A 50mm f/1.2, probably ASA 400 film (remember?), prefocused on the WSNY lid!!! (Lol!!)
Man they go fast! Lance pulled the peloton to a single file on the last lap, but i don't remember if USPS won.
Thanks Miles
The reason for the slow shutter speed was I was trying to use a touch of fill in flash to give a combination of motion blur and stopped action, but I was better at this sort of thing in 1988 with an old Rolleiflex loaded with 12 frames of Ektachrome!

I picked a better spot there (apart from the barrier getting in the way) to get the classic three-quarters on viewpoint.
(Oh, and I'd still like a K5II) The K20D spluttered to a frustrating card-writing standstill after a few shots (maybe the SD card wasn't up to the task)
