I don’t have a copy of the lens having he problem, but have many others, EF and EF-S. All my lenses have the screw protruding in the same place as it it appears in the picture, probably to act as a “stop” as Lemming51 indicated.

The flange appears to be the culprit in this case. All the flanges should be in the same plane as the surface where they originate at the back of the lens, with no curving or deviation.

Send the lens back!

If both the body and lens were purchased used from the same source, I would return both. Then I would think long and hard if I would be willing to accept a replacement from the same source or find another source for my purchases

I started in the 50's - my first picture was taken with a Leica and hooked me for life. I no longer use my Leicas, but I am still taking pictures. Some things never change.
