So I am wondering, is it like Ubuntu where you really don't want to mess with interim releases that are not LTS?
I think this is a matter of preference. Personally, I like to always have the latest and the greatest, but not the real cutting edge stuff. I like an up to date, but stable system. Up until recently, PCLinuxOS was my favorite distro for that. But, lately they have been having a bit of trouble with keeping up. I still think it is the easiest (for newbies) and most stable distro wile being reasonably up to date.
But, my desire for being a bit more up to date has made me switch to OpenSuse, but only because of their Tumbleweed repos. Tumbleweed repos make OpenSuse function a bit more like PCLinuxOS in that the system and applications are constantly being upgraded. It takes a little more work to set up correctly, but it is not that hard. Just follow this instructions:

Funny story: Cinnamon sounded appetizing, so I selected it as my desktop. Although it looked nice, some things did not work (e.g. could not move panel to top, active window was not highlighted) so I downloaded and switched to MATE desktop. Here is how MATE explained itself:
"A non-intuitive and unattractive desktop interface."
Gotta appreciate the irony, if you ever tried Unity.
Uhg, I can't stand interfaces that restrict the way I can work. For example, I often need to rename a file of folder while I am in the middle of a file save operation. With GTK based apps (the library used for Gnome and MATE) the developers decided that one shouldn't want to do that. Instead, they recommend that you save the file (with the wrong name if necessary), open a file manager, navigate to the location of the files in question, and rename them as desired. Forget it! I don't have those type of issues with KDE.
