tips for aperture / focus for shooting a group shot in low light
Sep 13, 2012

just wondering how everyone does this type of shot
I was shooting with the sigma 30mm wide open at 2.8 on a tripod,

the shot was a group of people sitting around a circular table on the deck, i didn't want to use a flash but wanted to keep it at the lowest iso, so the shutter speed was pretty ridiculous at 1.3 secs. I told everyone to hold their breath and not to move

since I wanted to be in the picture I set the camera to remote shutter and multi focus with face detection on, i think that was a critical mistake, due to the seating arrangement around a circular table I don't think the camera was smart enough to track all 5 faces and because of the really shallow DOF at 2.8 only the faces that were around the same focal plane were in focus. would it have been better to go with center focus/smaller aperture and use a flash?
