software correction, we all do it why shouldn't lens designers?

The thread on Photozone's review of the 12-35 talks about software correction for lens distortion, CA's etc.

Two views:

1. A reasonable design approach to give better performance in other areas (smaller lighter etc.)

2. 'optical only' the way lenses should be designed, software is cheating or hiding the truth

It doesn't make much sense...

Even if we had an optically perfect system those with view (2) would still be shooting RAW and doing a whole bunch of post production in software to get the final image.

Surely if you say the lens shouldn't be corrected in software you shouldn't be using any post processing!
