Certainly true for new lens designs. It does, however, present problems for the cfa/microlenses with old wide angle lenses that are not retro-focus designs. Relatively symmetrical lenses such as the old Zeiss 21mm F4 Super Angulon or the original Leica 28mm F2.8 suffer from microlens-induced vignetting on (for example) Leica M8/M9 systems. Of course this can be largely solved with very careful microlens designs.

The point I am making is that a short flange distance does not require the exit pupil to be close to the sensor, it just gives the option.
