I still use my D50 and it's my only DSLR. For me it's great and I don't feel the need to upgrade. One day I will, but not for now. It's still a terrific camera that makes beautiful images
If I were buying my first DSLR today though, I wouldn't buy the D50. If your daughter is a complete beginner I would start her out with the D3100 for less than $500 with kit lens. It's the perfect beginner camera and even has a tutorial mode for all the camera's features, helpful for someone who doesn't know about ISO or aperture etc. It's small and easy to carry but advanced enough that she could grow into it as she gets better.
