That said, I personally believe there isn't a better bang for the buck lens than the 40mm. It's not the fastest, but it's better at f/2.8 than any other budget lens. It's one of two AF lenses I own and the only one I bought new:
Finally, if the light's bad, a flash might be a more useful option. For depth of field you'd probably be better off to consider something longer like the 85/1.8 or 100/2.
