are inline images not allowed anymore?

I used to simply list the url of the jpg file (on flickr, for example, but any hoster would work for this) and as long as I didn't include a trailing semicolon, the image would be expanded and shown inline.
has this been changed? my last post tried to include some photos using the url method but only the ascii text of the url shows up.
I don't plan to use dpr 'galleries' (I have enough hosting already, don't need more copies of my photos floating around on other servers). is this a new policy or a code update that breaks on certain browsers?
