TG-1 button problem?

Picked up a TG-1 on the way to the airport. Downloaded the manual to my iPad (doesn't include a printed one) while I waited for the plane and by the time we were at the beach I knew how to use this thing (and make sure it was waterproof) .. went in the water knee deep and a few splashes later most of the buttons stopped working. I could power on and off and take pictures but not change modes etc.. frustrating but thankfully my iPhone camera saved the day and took some shots .. ran TG-1 under some fresh water and still no luck. The next day, it worked though and for the rest of the trip no problems but I am still not confident it won't happen again.

I searched here and didn't see anyone else with a similar problem so maybe I was just unlucky?

Also, I noticed the waterproof instructions that were included with the camera were for a different camera that had a different locking mechanism.

Is there any way to turn off those preview images in 'scene' and 'magic' modes? it takes forever to scroll through those.
