Backing up PS edits with LR4 catalog backup

Can anyone enlighten me as to whether photoshop or other external editor edits (ie the changes applied to the original file) are somehow backed up when you back up the LR4 catalog? Do I need to back up any actual image files that have been edited externally as well? If so, anyone found an efficient way of doing that easily?
