The combo you described is probably the best you're going to get for the money! However, the 18-105 is more of a "Jack of all trades, master of none" kind of lens. As a beginner though, I think it will serve you well in combination with the 35G.

the 18-105 was going to be my walkaround lens... I wasn't sure if there was a better option out there. I was also considering two zooms one for the wider end of things and one like 55-distance or so
