K5II and K5IIs Announcement- Some Thoughts
Sep 11, 2012

Polarizing release.

I see two sides mainly here, one side is the side that is used to manufacturers scrapping old designs and starting fresh- therefore disappointed.

The other side is the side that wants continual development of a sound design in a progressive manner- therefore happy.

Of course there are variations within the means, but basically these are the reactions I see and why.

I tend to think its smarter for a camera company to progressively develop, especially when they have such a big winner like the K5 on thier hands. So I definitely lean toward the second group above.

I was a little suprised that there wasn't a few more improvements made, mainly to firmware to satisfy some new features that are almost commonplace on the market. Yet the new releases at least on paper really nail the few criticisms that users have made toward the K5- the main two being the AF accuracy/speed/sensitivity and the LCD dust and usability in certain circumstances.

I like seeing a company specifically address issues that enthusiasts and others bring up, that is a huge plus and not always as common as it should be.

I'm waiting to see just how good this new AF system works. And if it works as promised, I'll likely get a K5II or K5IIs. I think even after the wave of releases at Photokina the new K5II/s and even the older K5 are still extremely competitive products for the market today.

I think it took guts for Pentax to make this kind of decision with this announcement instead of going for broke on a whole new design and scrapping the K5's excellent body and characteristics. Afterall, didn't many Pentax users just get that with the new K30?

I think so.
