The D800 on DX does just crop, but it still is higher res than the D300s. The advantage of the DX mode is the metering that if on the edges, metering is limited to the DX frame. Let's say you are in DX, and a bright light is out of DX frame are you are center weighting on a left focus point. That metering may carry over to the light outside of the DX frame.

Now, I could be wrong in how it works, but that is what I gathered from reading reviews and manuals. If that isn't how it works, then the DX mode is useless except for increasing frame rate or dropping file size.
