Don't forget about refurbished items. You can buy refurbished lenses for less than used and although they come in refurbished packaging and don't have a 1 year warranty they do have a 90 day warranty. I just bought the 70-300 IS (not DO) refurbished for my wife for $329-. Also, a 200mm 2.8L or 300mm f4L refurbished may hit your price point well. I used to have a 200 2.8L and it was great, sharp, fast and light. Refurbished inventory is very irregular everywhere. I sold my 70-200 2.8 non-IS on Ebay a month ago for $930 and it was in perfect condition. Lots of options.
