Did the fact that the D5100 does not auto focus during video mode cause you any grief
or hindrance?

Ditto, I'm looking at either D5100 or Sony A57... only upside to Sony is it's autofocus during video... if it's manageable to do manual the entiretime then I'll opt for the cheaper 5100...
Ditto on the editing question too. Do you also take lots of photographs? I'm starting to venture into taking videos to hopefully get movies like the ones you made but I'm having trouble balancing taking interesting footage vs taking interesting photos....
