Carl, When I complained to the retailer I bought it from, they contacted their Canon Rep (they are a respected retailer, with some professional customers). the rep told them that he recommends anyone who is unsure about it send it back to Canon complaining that the lens is making noise. They will check the connection. I suspect one of their assemblers had a bad day or they had a bad batch of solder on the assembly line. So far, knock on wood, mine has been working ok, even though itj's within the affected serial numbers.
