Costa Rica in 3 weeks... what to take?

I assume this recommendation is for protection of long telephoto lenses against the rain. I am sure they work well for this, and if stretched enough over the lens hood you can actually shoot through them (like a combo soft focus/sunset filter), but how do you get started putting them on?
