I totally agree. As I have mentioned in other threads I shoot a lot of sports but do not make enough to justify the D4 and the more expensive glass I would need to make up for the lack of reach compared to a DX camera. I had a Canon 1DM3 and after it was stolen replaced it with a 7D, never felt I was missing all that much in performance.

I shoot a little bit of everything with a dream of doing more gallery work. For that reason the D800 got me to switch. For me an upgraded D300s would be the perfect compliment because it would give me what the D800 lacks. If I mainly just did events it seems like Nikon has several cameras that can do the job well, including current DX models. I used my Canon 5DM2 for events and it was more than adequate even though focusing was not a strength of the camera.

I have a feeling there are a lot of other photographers that are in a similar situation. My only worry is if Nikon tries to force sports shooters to buy the D4 and more expensive glass by not offering a D300s upgrade. I think if Canon comes up with the rumored 7D upgrade there will be a lot of pressure on Nikon to come up with their version, I hope so anyway. This is why I am happy to read about the Canon 7D M2 rumor because I am not switching back and would love an affordable sports camera upgrade to the D300s.
