Not necessarily true. Nikon's can not anticipate the amount of detail that will be in your photos. Perform a test for yourself, one shot of the clear sky the next shot of a flower garden. No detail equals much much smaller file sizes.

The quality of its estimate of shots remaining doesn't improve - it always seems to show how many uncompressed shots will fit into the remaining space. On a 32GB card it will usually show 400 when the card is empty. I typically fit 700-800 lossless-compressed 14-bit RAW images on a 32GB card, depending on the content (blown white backgrounds compress well. Green foliage, not so much ).
