External Hard drive good for long term backup?

I have a bunch of pictures and videos that take up almost 100 gigs. when i shoot in 1080p it takes up a massive amount of space.

i want to preserve these files on a long term basis. i want to store it in a saffe deposit box. Will an internal hard drive enclosed be reliable storage for say 10 years until new storage technology comes out? Btw, I plan on getting a 1TB hard drive and adding files say once a month and storing it in a safe. Please share your expertise.
