Which Tamron 17-50mm?
In reply to BobT, Sep 7, 2012

The original non-VC lens is much sharper than the 17-85 IS: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=400&Camera=474&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=251&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

The 17-85mm overall image quality is good -- read the reviews for yourself ...

and many more.

Given the 17-85 IS price and max apertures may want to look at the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.0. Sigma does need to be stopped down a stop from max apertures which be the same as the max apertures of the 17-85mm IS. OR wait and save up for the Canon 15-85mm IS.

Now days with all the various on-line sites one can find more than enough reviews, with sample images, etc. to be able to make thorough comparisons with a little self initiative.
